Joo Chiat Map 2021
Joo Chiat Road was a simple dirt track running through the plantations from Geylang Serai to the sea in the 1920s. It was named after Chew Joo Chiat, a wealthy land-owner and philanthropist, who purchased large plots of land in Katong and was known as the “King of Katong". (Urban Redevelopment Authority)
In February 2011, the National Heritage Board designated Joo Chiat as Singapore’s first Heritage Town. The award provided funding for the development of heritage and community activities for the area.
Present Day and Joo Chiat Road is a bustling spot filled with specialty stores (like Singapore Trading Post), home décor and fashion boutiques, cafe's, restaurants, bars, fitness and health studios, arts and crafts and so much more.
As small business owners in the area we wanted to create a map that would allow fellow Singaporeans and tourists to browse around the area and have a lovely keepsake that they could remember the area by...and so the Joo Chiat Map was born.
The Joo Chiat Map is a beautifully hand-drawn and coloured map that captures the essence of the heritage neighbourhood and was designed by Thain Lin Tay.
“I took several trips to Joo Chiat Road to observe the lovely architecture and to absorb the vibe of the neighbourhood. It is important for me to internalise and ‘feel’ the place before I commence on the artwork,” shared Thain Lin. The result of his many weeks of research and sketches yielded this ‘fun’ version of the map showing the location of various landmarks and shops.
Thain Lin Tay
On weekdays, Thain Lin manages and runs IT projects in a large professional business services firm. On weekends and during his leisure time, he passionately indulges in the process of creating visual artworks as a means of documenting the urban space around him.
He usually paints in his favourite mediums of ink and watercolours, but he is equally comfortable to work in oil and acrylic on canvases for larger artworks. He enjoys meeting people and help his clients to document their homes and favourite places in paints. It’s almost a cliché to say that art is a way to communicate happiness, and that is evidently shown in Thain Lin’s artworks.
